Transistor in Andersonville
April 3, 2011
You have to meet Andy Miles and Rani Woolpert at Transistor in Andersonville. This multipurpose space is a record store, emerging artist gallery, web streaming radio station, performance venue, and electronics supply store. You’ll find it while strolling in Andersonville’s South Boundary just North of Winnemac on Clark.
Musicians know transistors as amplifying devices and I know it as a portable radio, but this storefront draws on the nostalgia of live radio performances. At 5pm weekly, “Friday Night Live” features a half-hour live performance at the store and partnering with KAM Instruments Corp. in Oakbrook, IL. Transistor broadcasts from 1pm to 7pm daily and archive each cast online.
If you happen to be a cinephile, and know what that means, Transistor hosts a free weekly BYOB film screening Tuesday nights at 7:30. This month’s theme is “April in Paris.” Look out for Documentary Month in May, a mixed bag in June, and a director’s series in July.
Transistor also runs fine art workshops and classes. My partner and I picked up a piece by Michael Rioux, dancer and fine artists based in Chicago and Seattle
Visit the crew in person at 5045 N. Clark street and listen live to the “shopcast”, Transistor Radio
