This year’s theme, “Artful Networks,” explores the communities that nurture and inspire Chicago artists and their work. The people with whom artists choose to work can be supportive in encouraging creative growth, experimentation, dialogue among peers, and community building. Ranging from traditional residency programs to collaboratives to informal relationships, our communities impact the way we create, support, and appreciate art. In celebration of the Alliance of Artists Communities’ 20th Anniversary Conference, which takes place in Chicago from October 19 to 22 (www.artistcommunities.org/conference), Chicago Artists Month 2011 looks at the various ways artists in Chicago are influenced by their social environments.

The Chicago Center for Literature and Photography, or CCLaP
[cclapcenter.com], is proud to announce their latest local live event,
a large-scale party to celebrate the release of their first four paper
books this summer.
An electronic publisher since 2007, CCLaP has been
quietly releasing new special-edition, handmade “Hypermodern” paper
editions of its four titles throughout the summer; and on August 10th
the group will be gathering at the popular Beauty Bar in the Bucktown
neighborhood for drinks, free food, and a half-hour reading from all
four featured authors, as well as a few surprise guests. Beauty Bar is
located at 1444 West Chicago Avenue, and the free event will take
place from 7 to 9 p.m., the reading itself from 8:00 to 8:30. All four
books will be for sale individually for $20 apiece; or for one night
only, attendees can purchase all four in a bundle for only $50.

Books and performers being featured that night include the novella
“Too Young to Fall Asleep” by SALLY WEIGEL, about a
Radiohead-listening “emo” high-school student who volunteers for the
Iraq War (originally published in 2009 [cclapcenter.com/asleep]); “99
Problems” by BEN TANZER, essays about the mental intersection between
running and writing (originally published in 2010
[cclapcenter.com/99problems]); “Life After Sleep” by MARK R. BRAND, a
day-after-tomorrow tale concerning a device that allows people to only
need two hours of sleep a night (originally published this past winter
[cclapcenter.com/lifeaftersleep]); and “Salt Creek Anthology” by JASON
FISK, a collection of linked “micro-stories” regarding four trashy
couples in the far Chicago suburbs (published this summer
[cclapcenter.com/saltcreek]). CCLaP’s “Hypermodern” series
[cclapcenter.com/hypermodern] is an attempt to create special
collector-worthy editions of all the center’s electronic books,
reasonably priced yet expertly made; they feature handmade hardbound
covers, including a color photo of the ebook’s original cover adhered
to the front, external Coptic stitching, whimsical decorative
endpapers, a special signature/provenance page for collectors, and a
full Colophon in the back listing all materials used. CCLaP itself has
been open online since 2007, and with a handful of local live events
held in varying venues across the city each year; the center also
produces a semi-weekly podcast, sells general giftstore-style
merchandise, and publishes over 150 book reviews a year at its popular
website. Among other accolades, it’s been featured twice at respected
arts guide BoingBoing.net, and its blog is followed by almost ten
thousand unique monthly visitors.

Ditch those old white socks or a crusty well-worn towels, and choose from a wide variety of fabrics and textures that will excite, rather than embarrass your lovers.

Coulter makes cum rags elegant with her choice of vibrant colors and ironically patterned fabrics. The textured fabrics are tantalizing and functional at the same time. Ellbe’s ironic and sensual choice of fabrics comes through in the pea’cock’ fabric and afro-centric female print.

To buy one of Ellebe’s Fluid Fabric, check out Ellebe’s website. Also, look for a free giveaway on our Facebook coming soon.

Ellebe’s most recent print exhibition was in May at the monthly RAW Artists Collaborative showcase at Vertigo Sky Lounge, 2 West Erie Street in Chicago’s Gold Coast.

Ashley Simone is the host of Foodgasm, a sensual web cooking series where “food is love” or love-making. Simone bursts with the liberated sexuality of a single and self-sufficient war-time working gal.
She takes inspiration from the era’s classic dishes and updates them. A pineapple upside down cake gets a twist with ripe mango slices and the typical green bean casserole is turned into to green bean cass-a-rolls. This sharp 1940s diner waitress gal is all about loving the food you eat and never getting bored with familiar golden-age American recipes.

She’s also lived in California for three years but in 2005 she decided to move back to the “Windy City” after college.

When I first saw Wendy’s work, I knew she had an eye for something different, that she had her own style. One of the first things that I noticed was her ability to take awesome self-portraits. So awesome in fact that she had her own show at The Coop in December of 2010 called In-Between Days. It was a collection of self-portraits, captured for the past several years in her free time as a personal project. Her love for self-portraits allows her to portray herself in all forms, negative and positive, and that’s what makes them so on the edge and pushing boundaries.

For Wendy, Chicago is a major city with so much diversity and culture that she doesn’t see herself living anywhere else, every so often she is encountered with amazing music, art, locations and most importantly interesting and inspiring individuals.

“Chicago is the urban, modern and growing heart of the Midwest – if you’re a photographer, musician, architect – Chicago is where one needs to be to grow, be inspired and succeed.”

We here at The UnScene Chicago agree with you Wendy.

Ever buy an educational DVD and realize you really could have done with just SOME of the content because you already knew most of it? Or WANT to buy one but weren’t willing to shell out $300 for a DVD set when you’re really only interested in a few of the lessons?

That was exactly what we were thinking when we created 5DollarTutorials.com. We saw what was out there in terms of content and wondered… if it works for songs/albums on iTunes, why can’t it work for DVDs in the educational space? We think it can.

We are creating tutorials that would normally be in larger sets, and soon we’ll be offering content that was originally in a full DVD set… but chopped into relevant chapters and released in easy to download, easy to digest, easy to PAY for sections.

Educational content, $5 at a time.
